GPS + QR Code Attendance
CourseKey's GPS + QR Code technology allows you to easily check-in and out of class and externships to verify and track your attendance.
Here are a few tips on how to get the most out of your CourseKey app and solve some of the most common issues.
How do I check in for + attendance?
Select your current class and when the attendance session is active tap Check In button.
If it is your first time checking in for attendance, you will be prompted to enable location services. CourseKey will only access your location when checking in for attendance, and this step should only need to be completed the first time checking in. If attendance is currently available for your course, your device will verify your location.
In addition, your instructor will provide a QR Code that can be printed or displayed digitally on a computer or tablet. Point your device's camera to scan the QR Code.
That's it! If attendance is currently available for your course, your device process the QR code to verify your location and confirm it was successful.
What if my course has multiple locations?
In some courses, such as externships, students may be prompted to select from a list of locations. Each location will be displayed with the site name and address. Simply select the location you are at to continue.
What if I get an error that says "Wrong Location"?
If you accidentally chose the wrong location, no worries, you can Try Again and select the correct location. If your location is not displaying correctly, your device might be having some trouble finding where you are located. If the GPS location of your blue pin on the map is inaccurate or the blue pin is not showing up, here are some things you can do to help fix the problem:
Try checking in a few more times...
Your device estimates where you are from sources like your web browser, WiFi networks, and other location-based application coordinates.
- After a few failed attempts the system will request an updated coordinate.
- If you are still unable to check-in after a few attempts it can be your location accuracy (see below for ways to improve).
More ways to improve location accuracy
If you get an error like "Your location cannot be determined" or your location is still wrong, here are some things you can try:
- Refresh your browser (such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari).
- Check to make sure you have a strong Internet connection.
- Restart your device.
What if I get an error that says "No Active Attendance"?
This message is letting you know that the attendance session has either not yet started or has already been completed. You will also see the details of the last session.
- If you miss the session you can speak to your instructor regarding the course policy.
- CourseKey Support does not make changes to attendance grades.

- networks to determine location.

- Open your device's Settings app.
- Tap Security & Location > Location.
- Under "Recent location requests," see the apps that recently accessed your location.
What if my camera isn't scanning the QR Code?
There are a few potential causes of a camera not being able to scan the QR-Code:
Lighting - too much or too little light when displaying a QR-Code on a projector or LCD display can cause issues. If this happens try to move to a better spot or adjust the lighting over the display area.
Obscured Camera - always check to be sure your device camera is clear from any debris or smudges as this can prevent the QR scanner from getting a clear reading. Standing too far away or at too great an angle may also create issues.
Pixelation - image distortion or pixelation can prevent a successful check-in depending on the quality of the hardware used to connect to a projector or LCD display. Ask the instructor to decrease the display size or use an alternative method to display the QR-Code.
What if I get an error that says 'Code Mismatch'?
This error is shown whenever the system does not recognize the code scan to match the attendance session. This can happen if the instructor is in the wrong class on CourseKey or is using an older printout from a previous attendance session. Let your instructor know if you are seeing this error.
Still Not Working?
