GPS Attendance
CourseKey's GPS technology allows you to easily check-in and out of class and externships to verify and track your attendance.
Here are a few tips on how to get the most out of your CourseKey app and solve some of the most common issues.
How do I check in for attendance?
Select your current class and when the attendance session is active click the Check In button.
If it is your first time checking in for attendance, you will be prompted to enable location services. CourseKey will only access your location when checking in for attendance, and this step should only need to be completed on your first check-in.
That's it! If attendance is currently available for your course, your device will verify your location and confirm it was successful.
What if my course has multiple locations?
In some courses, such as externships, students may be prompted to select from a list of locations. Each location will be displayed with the site name and address. Simply select the location you are at to continue.
What if I get an error that says "Wrong Location"?
If you accidentally chose the wrong location, no worries, you can Try Again and select the correct location. If your location is not displaying correctly, your device might be having some trouble finding where you are located. If the GPS location of your blue pin on the map is inaccurate or the blue pin is not showing up, here are some things you can do to help fix the problem:
- Try opening up Google Maps on your phone and see if your GPS location matches what our app is showing in the error dialog (we show your check-in location if there's a wrong location error). If not, then that's where the problem is coming from.
Find Your Current Location on the Map
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app .
- The blue dot on the map will show your location. If there isn’t a blue dot, at the bottom right, tap Your location .
Try checking in a few more times...
Your device estimates where you are from sources like your web browser, WI-FI networks, and other location-based application coordinates.
- After a few failed attempts the system will request an updated coordinate.
- If you are still unable to check-in after a few attempts it can be your location accuracy (see below for ways to improve).
More ways to improve location accuracy
If you get an error like "Your location cannot be determined" or your location is still wrong, here are some things you can try:
- Refresh your browser (such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari).
- Check to make sure you have a strong Internet connection.
- Restart your device.
What if I get an error that says "No Active Attendance"?
This message is letting you know that the attendance session has either not yet started or has already been completed. You will also see the details of the last session.
- If you miss the session you can speak to your instructor regarding the course policy.
- CourseKey Support does not make changes to attendance grades.

iOS Additional Troubleshooting Tips
- Make sure that you've set the date, time, and time zone correctly on the device in Settings > General > Date & Time. If possible, use Set Automatically.
- Keep a clear view in several directions. Walls, vehicle roofs, tall buildings, mountains, and other obstructions can block line of sight to GPS satellites. When this happens, your device uses Wi-Fi or cellular networks to determine your position until the GPS satellites are visible again.
- Restart your device
Android Additional Troubleshooting Tips
- Turn on the Wi-Fi on your device
- Restart your device
Still Not Working?
